The weekend's snowfall could not have come at a better time for area skiers and snowboarders. Granite Peak opened Sunday for the first time this season.

Around 150 people bought day passes and dozens more season pass holders also hit the slopes. Two lower and two upper runs were open to the public from 9-4p.m.

Granite Peak managers had hoped to open on Thanksgiving, but unseasonably warm temperatures forced them to push the date back.

"It was really important for us to be open today because the weekend is still here, you know you've got people from out of town, so you know, that's important," said general manager Vicki Baumann. "And we're closing for the rest of the week, just so we can make more snow and get more runs open for the rest of the week."

Baumann says there are crews that work around the clock to make as much snow as possible, because even when the real white stuff falls, it's not nearly enough to coat the hill.

Weather-permitting, Granite Peak will open again at 9a.m. next Saturday.
