St. Patrick’s Day is a time many people enjoy some great Irish food and even gives people a chance to spend time with family. But others spend the day doing something entirely different, enjoying their favorite beer.

While there are thousands of different types out there to choose from- you may be surprised to hear just what you can find right here in central Wisconsin.

It’s a sound that most people in Wisconsin are quite familiar with, the opening of an ice cold beer. It’s also usually a sound that means good times are to come. But, what Wisconsinites may not know, is that the Badger state is home to some of the best beer in the country, and no, we are not talking about Miller Brewing Company, or other large manufacturers similar to them.

"We’re a relatively small craft beer. I say relatively small were actually the 5th largest in state of Wisconsin. Some of our programs are the best in the nation. We focus on making high quality great beer," says Anello Mollica, Owner of Central Waters Brewery in Amherst.

But, this isn't your usual light beer with a well known name. What Central Waters Brewery focuses on, are craft beers.

"What makes a beer craft is that it’s not owned by national companies. They produce beer without the use of adjuncts meaning without the use of corn or rice or other cereal grains their using just malted barley. Then it comes down to flavor,” says Mollica.

That last part, flavor, is what sets craft breweries apart from other, larger well known companies. They only rely on four ingredients; malted barely, hops, water and yeast. This is what sets it apart from larger companies who use corn and rice type products to create a cheaper alcohol base.. This different, refreshing flavor has began to be noticed around the world.

"We’ve really seen this growth curve. In the early 1990's it was going well and then it crashed. We opened in the late 90's and people thought we were crazy. But we've seen steady growth. As a nation craft beer has grown," says Mollica.

Most craft beers can be found in just about every liquor store and gas station. That’s no different for Central Waters beers either. They’ve managed to move out of the state, and around the Midwest, but still their best market is right here in central Wisconsin.

"Craft beer as a whole will keep growing because as people begin to learn about the flavor they start to appreciate it for the taste and that’s a lot more important."

If you'd like to try some of their beer, Central Waters does have a tasting site right inside of their warehouse. All you have to do is call and make sure they are open before heading out. That number is (715) 824-2739.
