Go On a High Tech Treasure Hunt

Updated: Thu 4:25 PM, Nov 08, 2012

As you've probably heard, geo-caching, a high-tech scavenger hunt, is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the country.

During the real-world outdoor treasure hunting game, players of all ages try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices, including smartphones, and then share their experiences online.

When it gives you a list of geocaches nearby, it tells you what type of cache it is (whether it's big or small) and tells you how difficult it is to find.

You then can choose how you navigate to the cache. You can go just by a compass, google maps, or even turn by turn directions from AT&T's Navigator application.

Once you find the geocache, you can leave a note and post a picture of your find all from your smartphone. The application will keep track of your finds and even connect with Facebook so others can learn about your adventures.

The app uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning and cell towers to determine your approximate location. The application then queries the Geocaching.com database in real-time and provides a list of geocaches near you.
