Friday Fish Fry Returns

It's the first Friday of Lent and that can only mean one thing in Wisconsin. It's fish fry time.

More than 700 people packed the cafeteria at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Merrill to enjoy, what they call, the best fish fry in Central Wisconsin. A title Father Mike Mclain says was earned because of their special batter recipe. Only one person knows that recipe and he's not willing to share. The recipe is in such demand, however, that St. Francis actually supplies batter for other parishes fish fries. But the batter is not the only thing that makes this fish fry special.

"Everybody here is willing to serve everybody else. We've got kids in the confirmation program, the older adults, people who aren't even members of the church itself and it's just a great opportunity," Father Mclain told NewsChannel 7.

Around 40 volunteers serve more than 1,000 pieces of fish and 2,000 shrimp throughout the evening. Of course, you can't forget those fish fry sides like coleslaw, rye bread and fresh French fries. There's no better way to finish off the meal than with a homemade dessert.

This is the 10th year St. Francis Xavier has hosted a Lenten fish fry. They serve every Friday during Lent from 4:30PM to 7:30PM. They also take carry out orders starting Fridays at 1:00PM and home delivery is available for those living in the Merrill area.
