Fmr. Congressman Obey Shares Thoughts on Affordable Care Act

In the midst of the government shutdown, the Affordable Care Act is also being met with a firestorm of criticism despite open enrollment having started last Tuesday.

Former Wisconsin Congressman David Obey was one of the driving forces behind getting health care reform passed before retiring, even swinging the gavel in the house as the act was passed back in 2010.
He spoke to Newschannel 7 from his home in Virginia.
He says that history shows us that controversial bills often ultimately end up being successful, but only if congress is willing to work together to make adjustments.

"When Social Security started they needed numerous adjustments in it in order to make it work. The same thing is gonna have to happen with this program as it moves along. The important thing is to quit fighting yesterday's battles and sit down together and figure out how to make it work for the most people. " Obey says.

Congressman Obey represented Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District from 1969 through 2011 and once served as the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
