A former veterinarian convicted of stealing pain medication from the Antigo Vet Clinic will spend 45 days in jail and two years on probation after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors. Benjamin Blandin could also have the case dismissed if he stays out of trouble for three years.

Investigators say Blandin watered down the remaining product at the clinic to hide the incident. Another veterinarian at the clinic told investigators a cat suffered an anesthesia crisis during surgery, it was later suspected it was due to Blandin's tampering.

The investigation began in March 2013, after court documents say another employee says she saw Blandin accessing drugs from the supply lockbox. The employee told investigators Blandin was not to be using supplies from that lockbox unless it was after hours. The employee also stated Blandin did not have any patients at the time.

After initially denying any wrong doing, the criminal complaint states Blandin admitted to taking morphine, hydromorphone and hydrocodone from the clinic. An internal investigation accuses Blandin of adding water to the bottles he reportedly stole from.

The criminal complaint cites the dollar value of the alleged stolen drugs to be $462.

Blandin was fired from the clinic on April 5, 2013 as result of an internal investigation.

The clinic released this statement:

"Dr. Benjamin Blandin was suspended from employment at the Antigo Veterinary Clinic on Monday, March 4th upon his confession to us that he was using controlled substances, and subsequently terminated from employment. The Antigo Veterinary Clinic has taken all measures to ensure the safety of our patients and is taking legal action against Dr. Blandin."

Blandin, now of Franklin, Wis., will return to court in Langlade County on June 30, 2017.
