Fish Kill Might Look Worse Than It Is

The fish kill on the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir was predicted to be one of the worst since 2009. However, there is no way to tell just by looking in the water what the fish population may look like for anglers this season.

The Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company has been monitoring the water and oxygen levels on the Big Eau Pleine throughout the year. In February, WVIC along with the DNR started the aeration system in the hopes to slow the fish kill down.

Crappie and carp are mostly what’s being seen in the reservoir, but big game fish aren’t showing up yet, which might be better news than expected.

Ben Niffenegger, Environmental Specialist with WVIC said, “We’ve been cautiously optimistic so far this year. We haven’t identified any fish that were around that open water area which seems to indicate more sustaining population around the aerator.”

The DNR will do its spring shock of the reservoir in a few weeks. WVIC believes they’ll be able to tell from that how bad the fish population might be at that time.
