Firefighters jobs are to protect us and keep us safe, but several in Kronenwetter have gone above and beyond the call of duty by volunteering their time to raise money and food for needy families.
Chief Roger James and Captain Jim Luedtke both have a passion for giving. That is why they spent much of Friday driving to area businesses to pick up donations of food and money from area businesses.
Both say that a lot of work goes into the charitable effort, but that the emotions they see in those that receive the donations shows how much they are appreciated.
"We get a lot of hugs from people. A lot of people flat out breaking down. You feel it on the inside yourself. " Luedtke says.
Starting later this week they will begin donating the canned goods, cheese, and household items to families in need. Each year as the need grows, so do the number of families they serve.
"Last year we shot for 150 when I started and we ended up with over 300 was our final number." Luedtke says.
So far the firefighters have raised more than $8,000 from businesses. They say they will use every dime of it to help by more food for Christmas.
