A 20-year-old man is expected to be charged after he accidentally set fire to a home on Wausau's westside.

Around 1:50 pm on Monday, officers from the Wausau Police Department were dispatched to the home on the 3000 block of Wildwood Lane in reference to a structure fire.

The Wausau Fire Department Battalion Chief says the man was burning papers in a metal pan when it got out of control. No one was injured, but a pet cat did die in the fire. The house sustained fire and smoke damage to the basement and main floor. The family will not be able to stay there until repairs are made.

The man is expected to be charged with negligent handling of burning materials.
