The Portage County Sheriff's Department says alcohol played a role in a fatal accident in the Town of Lenark. Fifty-one year old Daniel Wetzel died at the scene of the accident on Buelow Road. His son, Richard Wetzel,31, was transported to Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah.
According to the Portage County Sheriff's Department, Richard Wetzel was turning eastbound out of his driveway on Buelow road when another eastbound vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck the rear of Wetzel's vehicle causing it to rotate clockwise, going off the road and then striking a tree with the drivers door.
The other vehicle was being operated by 23-year old Hanna Schacht.
Further investigation revealed Schacht had been driving under the influence and that there were three other passengers in the vehicle. The passengers, who were not injured in the crash, were identified as Trevor Young, Seth Bell and Kristina Klinger. All the passengers had been wearing their seatbelts. Schacht was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence and transported to the Portage County Jail.
