Farmers Eager for Right to Kill Attacking Wolves

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- Ranchers in the western Great Lakes region are eager to take up arms against a longtime enemy: wolves.

The gray wolf comes off the federal endangered species list Friday in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin, where the combined population is 4,400.

Wolves have rebounded strongly there after being hunted to near-extinction. They gained federal protection in 1974.

The three states will allow farmers to shoot wolves caught preying on livestock. They'll also consider establishing hunting seasons. Minnesota may have a hunt this fall in which 400 wolves would be killed.

Ranchers say they're glad for the opportunity to defend their animals. Wolf advocates say that's understandable, but they'll oppose hunting wolves for sport.

Bob, your statement clearly says you have never had prove anything to the DNR before, not to mention that its not a dollar sign that was killed, but the future of your farm. And as for relocation, that just puts off the problem and makes it someone elses. The Govt has been trying that for years, and it just dont work. Wolves are beautiful when in paintings and pictures. Wolves after your livestock are only beautiful when looked at through the scope of a large caliber rifle (preferably with hollowpoints). Nuff said.

Last time around took 200 years to bring them down to an acceptable level So by 2212 we should have them down to where they should be at.

And who's paying full market value for "their loss"? We are. Kill 'em all.

Why is there such 'eagerness' to kill the wolf? The landowner presently paid FULL MARKET VALUE for their loss IF it can be PROVEN to be done by a wolf. Just capture and relocate!
