Extension To File Tax Return Ends Next Week

(Press Release) Are you a Wisconsin taxpayer who will be filing your individual income tax return under an extension this year? If so, you must file by Monday, October 15th. Filing your return by this date avoids potential negligence penalties and late filing fees.

The Department of Revenue (DOR) encourages taxpayers to file their returns electronically. E-filing is the most accurate and secure way to file. The DOR offers free, secure electronic tax filing from its website at revenue.wi.gov.

WI e -file is available 24/7 and the program offers Wisconsin fill-in tax forms that perform the math to help prevent errors when you prepare your tax return. You will receive an acknowledgement that your tax return has been received and any refund can be deposited directly into a savings or checking account.

While an extension allows you more time to file the tax return, the department must charge 1% interest per month from the original due date if you owe state taxes. Payments are also due on October 15.

Taxpayers who filed an extension with the IRS automatically receive a state extension. You must attach a copy of the IRS extension to your Wisconsin tax return to show you filed the extension request. Please keep a copy of the IRS extension application, Form 4868, for your records.

If you need help or have any questions, please visit revenue.wi.gov or call (608) 266-2772.
