Avid snowmobilers are revving up their engines in Eagle River. The 2012 World Snowmobile Championship races are in town for the 49th year in a row.
This weekend, snowmobilers hit the track for the vintage races, showcasing sleds from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Organizers say they've gotten more than 1,000 entries for these races alone. Something they've never had before. But this is just the start of a week full of events says General Manager, Todd Achterberg.
He says, "This is the world championship, we're the only facility that is just for snowmobile racing, and we run three venues of racing snow cross, oval, and vintage so you can see anything you want to see."
He says time trials are set to begin Wednesday and Thursday for the world snowmobile championship races. In the meantime, crews will redo the track, making more snow and ice. He says the 10-day event pumps millions of dollars into the local economy, and surrounding areas.
The event will continue throughout the week, bringing in many more viewers and racers to enjoy the one of a kind venue. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the venue, or online.
