Drivers Urged to Remain Alert for School Buses

When the stop sign is out and children are getting off the bus, you need to stop.
It seems obvious, but veteran bus driver Connie Ruplinger has seen a lot in her fifteen years behind the wheel. She says the importance of stopping is not stressed enough.

"I don't think our drivers ed programs are doing justice. " Ruplinger says.

Over the years she has seen the violations getting worse.

"I see a lot of young drivers coming through the red lights and the stop arm on the side of the bus. They take no concern whatsoever to slow down." Ruplinger complains.

Steve Fischer, owner of Fisher Transportation in Marathon says he teaches his drivers to expect the worst when it comes to other motorists.

"You are always looking for the worst case scenario but hoping for the best case scenario. " Fischer says.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says that, on average, nineteen children are killed nationwide each school year in bus related accidents.
