FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- A former Mayville High School Spanish teacher will go to prison for having a sexual relationship with a student.

Fond du Lac County Judge Dale English went beyond the prosecution's sentencing recommendation and sent 44-year-old Shannon Cardinal to prison for two years. English told Cardinal the breach of trust by the teacher was significant.

Cardinal was convicted of six incidents of sexual assault and texting naked photos to the male student. A Fond du Lac County prosecutor recommended one year in jail. WLUK-TV reports the defense argued for a month in jail and probation.

Cardinal offered a tearful apology before sentencing Wednesday. Cardinal will serve a year of extended supervision following her prison sentence.

A Dodge County teacher is facing 12 felony charges after being accused of having sex with a student.

The criminal complaint says 43-year-old Shannon Cardinal, a teacher at Mayville High School, started having sex with the boy last December, when he was 16. It also shows the latest incident between cardinal and the now-17-year-old happened this month.

Prosecutors say Cardinal's two-year-old child was with her during one of the assaults.

School administrators say they took action immediately.

Cardinal is free after posting a $5,000 bond. If convicted, cardinal faces up to 186 years in prison.

Mayville is 20 miles south of Fond du Lac.
