Driver Cited for Crashing into Home and Fleeing Scene

A 28-year-old Stevens Point man is expected to be charged with operating while intoxicated- causing injury, after authorities say he crashed into a housing injuring two people inside.

Around 4:30 am on Saturday, October 27 dispatch received a call stating the car was partially inside a residence at a home on Main Street in the Village of Amherst Junction. The caller indicated that there was a significant LP gas leak caused by the crash.

According to a press release, the driver, John M. Koback was able to back up and flee scene. A short time later, the Portage County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a truck on fire in the Village of Amherst. Contact was made with the driver of the truck and it was determined that this was the vehicle that had crashed into the residence in Amherst Junction.

Both people that were in the residence at the time of the crash sustained injuries and were transported to St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point.
