Despite Heavy Snow, Many Area Snowmobile Trail Systems Remain Closed

All the snow we’ve received across Central Wisconsin may have some people wondering if it's enough to open up area snowmobile trails. Those who maintain the trails say it’s not even close.

Although we got right around five inches in the Wausau area, Marathon County Snowmobile Coordinator, Jon Daniels, says that's still not enough to open up trails in Marathon County.

Daniels says it takes at least six to seven inches of a good solid base before trails can even begin to open. Since weather has not been cooperating, snowmobile enthusiasts will have to wait for more of the white stuff. Daniels says that rain really slowed down the opening of the trail systems.

"We were in a situation on January 10th where we had rain and that basically took care of any snow we had. So were basically starting from scratch and trying to rebuild the trail base and hopefully are waiting for additional snow,” says Daniels.

He says that last year the trails were only for a total of 5 five days, far fewer than most years.

If you are wondering about other county trail systems, Lincoln and Langlade County trails are both closed as well. Most of Oneida County trails are open at this time.
