Low Cost Ways to Decorate Your Yard for Fall

It's that time of year when cornstalks, gourds and jack 'o lanterns adorn home decorating for Halloween and fall in general.

You don't have to be Martha Stewart to decorate beautifully and in fact you don't have to spend of a bunch of money either.

Thursday morning, we visited Diane Neumann from Down to Earth Greenhouse in Wausau. She says now is the time to start recycling things from your garden and turn them into outdoor decorations. “If you prune it, use it and save it,” she explains.

She showed us to low maintenance example of creative outdoor decorations. She says grab a planter, you most likely already have and add some purple fountain grass. According to online gardening resource, the grass needs to be placed in a sunny location with well-draining soil. It can be planted nearly anytime, but spring is the most suitable time for planting.

Diane says to add mums or asters nearby to help add a little more color.

Another easy display involved wrapping Karl Foerster Grass around a stick, securing it, and placing it into the drainage hole of planter. She then packed straw around the grass to help balance it and make it look a little more rustic. “The best part is it's soil-less so it won't need any watering”, she added. You can place gourds or pumpkins on top the straw. If they sink down just add more straw for more support.

She also suggested incorporating Sumac tree branches into your decor as the leaves have now turned that wonderful orange and red color.
