It's hard to fathom that a routine traffic stop for expired registration could end in an hour long pursuit, but that is exactly what happened last week. As newly released dash cam video shows us, the driver put himself, police, and the public in extreme danger. Its something that upsets those who feel the chase was way too close for comfort.
"Its my backyard. You don't expect that to happen in your backyard where kids usually play." says Wausau resident Leslie Spear.
Like many other Prospect Avenue residents, Spear was enjoying a quiet evening at home when she saw the pursuit speed right past her front door.
"We noticed the sirens first. We just happened to look out the window because something was going by really fast with the sirens and there were about five cop cars chasing one car down our alley." Spear said.
Police say if there are more people around, it is more likely they won't pursue in that way.
"Something that is weighted by an officer throughout the pursuit is the risk that it poses to the public versus the gain it has in apprehending the offender." says Wausau Police Captain Ben Bliven.
For now police and residents are glad they were able to arrest this suspect without anyone getting hurt.
