Dash Cam: SUV Causes Trooper to Lose Sight of Suspect During Chase

When you see lights and hear sirens when driving ---it's the law that you pull over.

It seems like a simple concept, but many people don't pay attention and that can create some big problems for emergency responders.

Tuesday, NewsChannel 7 showed you dash cam video from a chase and OWI arrest. In the case, investigators say the driver reached 113 m.p.h.

What we noticed at the beginning of the dash cam video, was a SUV that didn't pull over to get out of the way, and actually caused officers to temporarily lose sight of the vehicle they were chasing.

It took the driver of the SUV nearly 30 seconds to pull off to the side. Failing to pull over can lead to big problems for drivers explains a Sergeant with the Wisconsin State Patrol.

"There is a citation that can be issued for that-- the bond amount on that I believe is $326. There are four points assessed to a license if you are convicted. There are penalties that go along with that, so it's important to pay attention driving and what is going on around you when you are driving," explain Sgt. Hartson.

He says people often don't notice emergency responders because they either don't look in the mirror or are playing the radio too loud to hear sirens.
