Minocqua Fudge Shop Says Tradition is Secret to Booming Business

Summertime always brings flocks of tourists to the northwoods and there is a sweet treat in store for those who visit Minocqua. Dan's Minocqua Fudge has been family owned since it opened in 1967 and tradition is very important to them. In fact they haven't changed a recipe since they first opened their doors.

"Chocolate fudge is the most popular, nothing comes close. Every year, number one. It's always has been and it always will be,” explains owner Michael Johnson.

Although there is a clear favorite, Dan's Minocqua fudge also offers popular items such as bear paws, salt water taffy, and this years newest addition - sea salt caramels. But when it comes to their famous fudge....

"We always hold a little bit back so that nobody can have Dan's Minocqua fudge, other than Dan's Minocqua fudge,” says Johson. While he wouldn't give away the recipe, he tells us it's about a 40 minute process.

And their customers stretch way behind Oneida County.

"We have people from all over the world coming in here. We have had people from China and Japan, every summer we have quite a few European tourists, who come in."

Right as we wrapped our interview, and just within in an hour of opening, the shop was already filling up with customers.

The shop is located at 521 Oneida Street in Minocqua.
