MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says a deer from Racine County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

It's the first known positive case in the southeastern Wisconsin county of the mad-cow-like brain disease that can be fatal to deer.

A bow hunter harvested the 3 1/2-year-old doe near Bohners Lake and volunteered it to the DNR for sampling when it was registered last month.

The DNR's Tim Lizotte says the positive case in Racine County is not unexpected, since the county has been in the wasting-disease management zone for years.

Lizotte says the agency will continue to sample deer in the area and encourage hunters who want deer tested to bring them to sampling locations throughout the muzzleloader, late archery and Holiday Hunt in the CWD management zone.
