MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources official says it's too late to cancel a four-day antlerless deer hunt in northern Wisconsin as three Republican lawmakers are requesting.

The lawmakers on Friday asked that the hunt beginning Thursday be canceled north of Highway 64. The highway runs across the state from north of Hudson to Marinette.

But DNR big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says the process for canceling the hunt takes about six months, per the process established by the Legislature in 2011.

The lawmakers say they want to cancel the hunt due to depleted deer numbers. But Wallenfang says permit numbers were adjusted downward this year knowing the number of deer would be lower.

Sen. Tom Tiffany and Reps. Mary Czaja and Rob Swearingen sent the letter.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Three Republican lawmakers are calling on the state Department of Natural Resources to cancel the four-day antlerless deer hunt in northern Wisconsin scheduled to begin Thursday because of a depleted herd.

The lawmakers sent the request Friday asking that the hunt be canceled north of Highway 64. The highway runs across the state from just north of Hudson all the way to Marinette.

A spokesman for DNR did not immediately respond to a request for reaction.

The DNR reports that the northern area of the state saw a 15 percent drop in the overall harvest during the just completed nine-day gun season, the largest decline of any region.

Sen. Tom Tiffany, of Hazelhurst, and Reps. Mary Czaja, of Irma, and Rob Swearingen, of Rhinelander, sent the letter.
