UPDATE: Cause of Highway Dept. Fire Still Under Investigation

The cause of fire that destroyed more than $1 million worth of highway department equipment is still under investigation.

James Griesbach, Highway Commissioner, said pinpointing an exact cause could be difficult due to the amount of equipment inside the building.

Griesbach said at this point the fire does not appear suspicious, however, it is still under investigation.

The fire happened during the early morning hours of April 18. A passing driver reported the fire.

An early morning structure fire in Edgar has caused more than $1 million in damage to county vehicles, according to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department.

Early Friday morning, a passing driver reported smoke emanating from one of the storage garages at the Marathon County Highway Department facility on State Highway 97 near Edgar.

At latest word, six heavy trucks, a front end loader, and a skid steer sustained damage in the fire. The initial damage estimate is approximately $1.5 million, but the Sheriff's department says the estimate is expected to change.

A cause is currently under investigation.
