House Damaged from Fire Near Athens
A fire damaged the entire upstairs floor of a home near Athans. It started just after 9:00 p.m. Monday on Mount View Lane.
The Athens and Edgar Fire Departments were called to the scene.
The Fire Chief said the blaze started in an old wooden fire place on the upstairs floor.
"They had what used to be a wood stove years ago in the furnace and they had a thimble to cover up the hole," Fire Chief Ronald Lavicka with the Athens Fire Dept. said. "It burnt through that and started the paneling on fire upstairs in the room."
The home was not a total loss, but the upstairs is heavily damaged.
The homeowner, David Dalman, said he has a place to stay for the night.
"I guess it's kinda a little discouraging that we gotta replace all that stuff now," Dalman said, who lives in the home with Anna Hanson. "But I guess I know we got some friends that can help us out, and places to stay. So not too worried."
