UPDATE: Cause Still to be Determined in I-39 Pileup

The cause of multi-vehicle collision that prompted the Department of Transportation to shutdown the northbound lanes of Highway 51 near Knowlton, has not yet been determined.

It's believed between 20-25 vehicles were involved in chain-reaction style crash. The closure remained in place for about four hours.

No serious injuries were reported, but three people were transported to nearby hospitals.

The State Patrol says because the crash is still under investigation, they have not yet issued any citations.

UPDATE: Tues. 9:30 PM, Jan. 14, 2014

All northbound lanes of Interstate 39 are now open. A portion of it was closed for about four hours on Tuesday after a massive crash near Knowlton.

A sergeant with the State Patrol says it's believe 20 to 25 cars were involved. At this point there is no word if citations will be issued.

Despite closing down the northbound lanes of a major highway in Marathon County, State Patrol says those injured only suffered minor injuries.

Three people were transported by ambulance, but again their injuries not believed to be serious, according to the Fire Chief Josh Klug, of the Mosinee Fire Dept. Chief Klug say it was a great joint effort by multiple emergency crews.

State Patrols say they will jointly continue their investigation into what caused the crash with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department.

State Patrol says they responded to more than 50 accidents Tuesday in NorthCentral Wisconsin.

According to State Patrol, multiple injuries are being reported following a an accident involving at least 20 vehicles near Knowlton Tuesday afternoon.

The area is near mile marker 175. The northbound lanes of I-39 at the crash site are closed, and expected to be closed until 6 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY: Tues 3:03 PM, Jan. 14, 2014

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says all northbound lanes of Highway 51/ Interstate 39 near Knowlton in Marathon County are closed due to a crash.

Authorities are responding to the report of crash involving as many as 30 cars. No word yet if there are any injuries.

The road is expected to remain closed until 5 p.m.

The nearest intersection is Highway C. This portion of the highway is shutdown at this time.

The detour is now in place. Northbound traffic will exit at County DB, go west on County DB to WIS 34, east on WIS 34 back to I-39/US 51.
