A Shawano County woman is alive after her dogs alerted her to a house fire.
The house on Cherry Road in the Town of Hutchens, which is east of Birnamwood, is being declared a total loss. The homeowner and her four small dogs were able to escape without injury. The fire was first reported around 8 pm Thursday but it took several hours to contain the blaze.
According to Chief Randy Berger of the Birnamwood Fire Department, the homeowner called 911 when she heard her dogs barking and went to investigate.
"She'd seen some smoke and some flames on the northwest corner of their house," said Chief Berger. "By the time we got here, there was flames coming out the window on one side of the house."
Crews were on scene throughout the night clearing debris around the home. The fire remains under investigation but Chief Berger believes an electrical spark caused the blaze.
