Today a community in Portage County is tightening its laces to remember one of its own.

Family and friends gathered together in Amherst to raise money and pay tribute to Sgt. Eugene Uhl III.

The Amherst native was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq back in 2003.

The annual 5K Walk Run is in its third year and will raise money for the Tomorrow River Scholarship Fund.

Sgt. Uhl's family says that he would have enjoyed seeing everyone come together for the good of the community.

"I think he would be proud of us. The three of us, my sisters and I, working so well together with my mom and getting everything worked out. Doing this walk and participating in it makes me feel closer to him," said Chastitiy Walker.

Walker is Eugene's older sister.

His family says the walk run follows a similar route to one that Sgt. Uhl ran in high school as a member of the cross-county team.

The event ends at Bootlegger's Bar and Grill in in Amherst Junction for a raffle and dinner.
