A Colorado family's rescue story of how their dog became stranded on thin ice is severing as seasonal reminder for pet owners in the Midwest.

According to KKTV-TV in Colorado Springs, Colo., the family was hiking the Colorado Trail about 70 west of Denver, when their dog, Jonah slipped out of his leash and chased ducks on to a pond.

Rod Vargas, Jonah's owner, tells the station, "He was running around and all of a sudden he just froze. I think he looked down and realized where he was."

When Jonah refused to move, the family called 911.

A Sergeant from the Summit County Sheriff's Office arrived with a dry suit and was able to use a log to coach Jonah toward him, then carefully slid them both back toward shore.

It was so touching what they did," said Vargas. "I know for them it was probably something they deal with daily, but for us it was a big deal."

The Sheriff of that county, John Minor says, “"This time of year, you should assume that no ice is safe."
