It's a sure sign autumn is here - the leaves have changed and are falling. For residents in the City of Wausau leaf pick-up is scheduled for Oct. 22nd. It's a process that will run for 2 weeks. (to see the entire pick-up schedule check out the link below) During that time the Street Supervisor, Robert Andringa, for Public Works says they'll pick up about 18,000 cubic yards of leaves. That's equivalent to about 2,000 large dump trucks. They'll also sweep about 866 miles worth of streets.
It's obviously a long process, and Public Works ask you follow these simple rules to help make their job run smooth:
-Please keep leaf piles free of debris and brush. These things can clog the machines used to suck up the leaves.
-Do NOT rake your leaves into the gutter until a day or two before your scheduled pick-up. This keeps leaves from clogging the storm sewer and from washing into the river.
If you can't wait until your scheduled pick-up you can always drop them off at the yard waste site (105 East Chellis Street). The hours have been extended to meet the influx of people who may be wanting to drop them off. Only residents of the City of Wausau are allowed to use the yard waste site. Before dropping off items you will be asked to show a photo i.d. or mail indicating you are a resident. To use the site it is free of charge.
Extended Hours through Sunday Nov. 18th, 2012:
Monday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Thursday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You may be wondering what the city does with all the leaves that are collected. Andringa says they are all recycled into compost and used by area businesses.
