We all enjoy watching it, but the video captured by police car dashcams serves a purpose beyond our own entertainment.
The Stevens Point Police Department just finished upgrading their squad cameras to the tune of $45,000. Police officers say the upgrade was long overdue.
"We're hoping to really capture additional footage of pursuits, traffic stops, and other incidences that will help build our case and help with prosecution," Officer Joe Quisler explains.
The new system is far more compact and user friendly. It also operates using a memory card instead of WIFI like their previous system. Officer Quisler tells NewsChannel 7 that sometimes the WIFI would cut out and they would be left with no video off which to write their reports.
The new cameras couldn't have come at a better time either with the start of a new school year at UWSP kicking off the busiest time of year for the department.
