A couple is without a home after a fire burned it to the ground early Christmas morning.

The Owen-Withee-Curtis Fire District Chief Mark Renderman said they got the call just before 2 a.m. Wednesday to a residential structure fire in the Township of Hoard on Pelsdorf Avenue.

The middle-aged couple escaped safely from the house with minor scratches and bumps.

Renderman said the house is a total loss, however if the couple wasn't alerted with smoke and heat detectors, he wasn't sure they would have made it out safely.

"The weather makes it hard with the snow for us to respond," Renderman said.

He said the couple described the fire as fast-moving.

Owen-Withee-Curtis Fire District, Village of Dorchester Fire Department, Abbotsford Fire Department and Clark County Sheriff's Office assisted with the fire.

Renderman said he's fought a fire on Christmas Eve in the past, but hasn't on Christmas Day.
He said the American Red Cross will assist the couple.

"You feel bad for the people," Renderman said.

The fire's cause is stil undetermined and it is under investigation.
