Yes, its nice getting places on four wheels, but perhaps you don’t have the money for gas or money to buy a car. Also, a driver’s license may not be an option.

So, then two wheels are always better than none. That’s the reality students in Shelley Lehman’s special education class are faced with. Graduating from Rhinelander High School, finding a job, but not being able to get there.

Shelley asked the community for recycled bikes with a program called changing gears, and found a place for them to be fixed and fit at Mel’s Trading Post.

However, the need was so great, the project expanded to anyone who might need one.

Shelley told us, “It started with a student that just needed to get a bike to get to work, and then it evolved so I had to ask Mitch (owner of Mel’s) and see if there had ever been a recycled community bike program.”

Shelley says the outpouring of support has been tremendous, and that she couldn’t do it with out Mel’s.

She also credits a couple of young men who donate their time and skills to get bikes in the perfect shape before hitting the road.

To donate bikes or buy a cook book, you can contact Shelley at 715-891-0474. You can also visit Mel’s Trading Post in Rhinelander and drop off a bike.
