Richard and Denise Wiebel have been married for 38 years. In 2009, Richard was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In 2012, Diane was told she had breast cancer.
"I kept thinking two people in the same family can't have cancer but it does happen," Denise Wiebel said.
Both Richard and Denise survived. Their experiences have given them motivation to share their stories to others dealing with the effects of the disease. Their message to the 135 people at this year's Celebration of Life event at the James Beck Cancer Center is simple: Live and appreciate life to the fullest.
"Work hard and play hard," Richard Wiebel said.
Even if it's just enjoying the little things.
"Every day I wake up, that's a new beginning for me," Denise said. "I can still get up, go to work, walk my dog, that's our biggest thing yet."
And knowing that no matter the struggle, you're not alone.
"You don't have to go through it by yourself," Richard said. "There are great people here."
"It was just overwhelming. Very nice. Makes you feel that you're loved," Denise said.
And as Richard and Denise have shown...survivors can experience productive, active lives. Through the power of each other.
