CWA: Furlough Legislation Doesn't Mean Tower Will Stay Open

The manager at the Central Wisconsin Airport says even if the president signs the bill to end air traffic controllers furloughs, it doesn't automatically mean the tower there will stay open.

President Barack Obama says he will sign the legislation that will allow the FAA to move about $250 million from one fund to another to end the mandatory days off for air traffic controllers. They have caused delays at airports nationwide.

C-Way manager Tony Yaron tells NewsChannel 7 language to keep the towers open was removed from the bill before it was approved by congress. So, the airports will have to convince the FAA to make the move. The towers at the Mosinee facility and many other smaller airports across the country are scheduled to close in the middle of June as part of the sequester budget cuts. At Mosinee, control of the airspace will be shifted to the tower in Minneapolis.

Yaron also says the money moved into the fund to keep the air traffic controllers on the job will come from the capital improvement fund, which is helping to pay for a multi-million dollar, multi-year project at The Central Wisconsin Airport. He says he's not sure if that will have an impact on the work there, but will be looking into it.
