Today may have been wet and rainy, but the streets of downtown Wausau were filled with shoppers. For nearly four decades restaurant and business owners have used the annual sidewalk sale to bring in new customers.

Nicole Chickering, owner of Nicole's Boutique, said she uses the sidewalk sale to her advantage, "It's a terrific weekend for us. We've seen people from everywhere from the local townships all the way to some ladies from Norway."

Chickering said sometimes it's the out-of-towners who enjoy the weekend more than the locals. "Many times it's not easy to tell people right next door how fabulous your downtown actually is," said Chickering.

Tara Nowak, owner of Sweet Lolas, said she's grateful for events like the Balloon Rally and Chalkfest because they really draw people to shops downtown.

"We're really lucky that our downtown has worked so hard at bringing fun events to Wausau, and that definitely gets great exposure for our businesses."

Business owners like Nowak say they hope this weekend's exposure will keep shoppers coming back all year round.
