NAOMI, the local interfaith group integral in getting back Metro Ride's Route K, which connects Weston, Schofield and Rothschild to the greater Wausau area, is celebrating its return Wednesday.
The group is paying for free bus rides on Route K during any of its seven runs on Wednesday, January 2. Members of the group held a short presentation prior to boarding the bus for its first ride.
Weston cancelled the route due to lack of funds, but a passed referendum in June required the village to provide public transportation for citizens.
A compromise was reached allowing the village to have seven runs versus the 12 it previously ran.
Those who rely on the bus to get where they need to go, are thrilled the buses are rolling.
"It's the best Christmas present ever to see that map back on the computer that it was coming back," said Kathi Zoern, a member of NAOMI and bus rider.
She says she relies on public transportation to meet all of her basic needs, and that the fight to bring the route back was well worth it.
"I've been involved in this since day one," she said.
