The Everest Metro Police Department says a man found deceased in his vehicle in the Eau Claire River in Schofield is Matthew Chaignot, 27, of Wausau.
Witness Nathan Everson said he saw the vehicle in the water Tuesday morning and ran to a nearby business to call 911. Everson said he saw deployed airbags inside the vehicle. He tells us he dived in the river and attempted to open the doors, but the doors were locked.
Crews responded to the area around 8:20 a.m.
Our reporter at the scene said there are skid marks on the grass along the river bank.
Captain Clay Schulz Chaignot's preliminary cause of death is drowning. Toxicology results will not be back for several weeks.
As crews worked to tow the vehicle to shore Tuesday afternoon, divers were seen collecting broken pieces of the vehicle from the water.
The vehicle was covered with a tarp as it was removed from the water.
