A Wisconsin man is making a huge splash on the national music scene.
Bon Iver is the stage name of 30-yr-old Justin Vernon, from Eau Claire, and this year, he's nominated for three of the biggest national Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.
You can see him as the musical guest on the February 4th episode of "Saturday Night Live" as well.
His parents Gil and Justine Vernon say Justin knew what he wanted to do with his life. Justine said "he's living his dream. You know how many people get to do that? he's wanted to be a musician since at least 10. He asked if he could quit piano if he went to guitar…from that point on it was him and his guitar always."
The grammy nominated musician grew up in his parents home with his two siblings near Eau Claire. "We actually partitioned a room in the basement right below us with sound proof in the wall...we had nine kids down there with trombones, trumpet, two saxophones, three guitars and a keyboard all plugged in" said Gil.
"We always thought that he had talent but we're his parents, you have to take that with a grain of salt" said Justine. Justine says it began as a middle school dream, a band called Skillet. Then came Mount Vernon and a band also born in Eau Claire, Deyarmond Edison after Justin's two middle names.
In June of 2011, the latest self-titled album, Bon Iver, was released.
The band recorded it at a once-vet clinic-turned recording studio in Fall Creek…just miles from the Vernon's home. By then, brother Nate stepped in to co-manage the band.
Now, the band is among the nominees for Record of the Year and three other categories in this month's 54th Grammy Awards.
