Blue Green Algae Bloom Creates Problems in Pelican Lake

A build up of blue-green algae is creating big problems on Pelican Lake in Oneida County.

It has become highly concentrated along the shoreline.
It can cause skin irritation if you come into contact with it, and serious stomach problems if you drink the lake water.
While the cause isn't completely known, pollutants near the lake including grass and plant fertilizer can make the algae worse.
That is why local residents say everyone needs to work to keep the lake clean.

"We know that the Oneida County economy is based heavily on tourism. Local taxpayers have homes on lakes and if we destroy the lakes, if they look like this, people are not going to be coming here." says homeowner Jean Roach.

It's not known how long the algae bloom will last.
It can last anywhere from a few days up to several weeks depending on weather conditions.
The DNR and Oneida County Health Department are posting warnings around the lake telling people to avoid contact with the water.
