MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has raised about $831,500 in his bid to survive a Democratic primary and oust Republican Gov. Scott Walker in next month's recall election.

Campaign finance reports filed Monday technically show Barrett raised $831,508 between Jan. 1 and April 23. Barrett didn't enter the recall race until March 30, however.

He spent $808,975 and had $475,496 on hand.

The mayor is one of five candidates running in a May 8 Democratic primary. The winner earns a chance to defeat Walker in a June 5 general recall election.

Democrats forced Walker into a recall as payback for pushing through legislation that stripped public workers of their union rights.
Walker, for his part, reported raising $13 million from Jan. 18 through April 23. He had $4.8 million on hand.
