Sometimes with tight schedules and little money for day care, parents don’t have any other option but to leave their kids with young children. That’s why students in grades 5-8 are invited to come and learn the basics of how to safely provide care for young children.
The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services in Merrill wants to make sure kids are ready for the responsibility of taking care of a younger child.
Christy Wheeler, a Child and Family Services Specialist told us, “Safety is huge, we spend a lot of time with safety and in certain situations kids may find themselves in a babysitting situation.”
Organizers recommend children 11 and older are old enough to baby-sit kids that are 6 months old and up. They believe newborns and young babies should still be taken care of by adults. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services offers 2-4 classes each year.
