No one was injured during an early morning fire at Northern Wire in Merrill over the weekend, however, damages are estimated to be around $2 million. Northern Wire is a custom wire forming company located near the Merrill Airport.
Fire crews responded to the report of smoke coming from the roof around 1:30 Sunday morning. Merrill Fire Chief Dave Savone said the majority of the fire was found in the metal plating area of the factory. Crews aggressively attacked the fire and were able to put it out in about 45 minutes. The specialized area, however was a danger of having unknown chemicals, so the Wausau Fire Department Hazardous Material Team was put on standby.
The fire was contained in the room, which makes up about 15 percent of the factory. The room had a fire door to help seal the are and protect others from being damaged. Other rooms only received light smoke damage.
The Merrill Fire Department used its recently approved Lincoln County MABAS Division #155 to call for pre-planned assistance. The received assistance from Corning Fire Department, Town of Maine Fire Department, Wausau Fire Department, Town of Texas Fire Department, Tomahawk EMS, and Pine River Fire Department.
The fire is under investigation, but Savone said it appears to be sparked from an electrical issue.
