Amherst Students Get Preview of Ice Wars

Updated: Fri 5:42 PM, Jan 04, 2013

Students at the Tomorrow River School in Amherst had a treat today as a special parade of race trucks and trailers made their way to the city.

Two race teams paraded their race haulers and equipment from the race track through town to the elementary school. One team was from Tomahawk with Nick Van Strydonk and the other from Michigan. Both racers will participate in the Portage County Ice Wars to compete for $125,000.

Professional racer, Nick Van Strydonk told us, "We do it for the love of the sport, not to try and become rich off of it."

The other pro rider that came to the school was Michigan native Malcolm Shartier said, "I came here to promote the promoter of this track. Without people like him or the other dedicated people in this sport, I'd have nothing. I give back because I want to."

Kids were able to have autographs signed, meet the drivers, and took pictures with the equipment.

Portage County Ice Wars starts tonight and ends Sunday with a packed weekend of racing for everyone in the family.
