With each point, Mariah Whalen's dreams are growing...and so is she.
"I'm 6 foot, I want to be 6'3. I think that'd be awesome for what my goals are to play college and be up there." said Whalen.
This Freshman definitely gets up there for the Newman Cardinals. Earlier this month she had a night with 24 kills, 14 digs and eight aces. Stats that make coach Betty Lange excited about the future.
"She's a young player that has a long ways to go. She's playing at a high level and that's only going to get better the more that she plays. She has had a lot of experience and it's just really a lot of fun to see her grow" commented Newman Volleyball head coach Betty Lange.
And Mariah's not the only one in the Whalen family with athletic genes.
"My sister is a division one volleyball player at USF, and she's really good. And my brother is a great football player, he is really talented" said the youngest Whalen.
With her dominant performances at the net and her numerous unanswered serves is no question that college volleyball is in this girl's future. But for right now Mariah's philosophy on the game embodies what high school athletics are all about.
"Just the whole sport, it's just fun to play. Being around the team, the whole atmosphere. I love having six people on the court just communicating and talking it out. Being able to go out and play some of the fiercest competition and it's just really fun."
Having fun with her teammates and winning games is something no matter how tall you get, you can never outgrow.
