Bears Looking for Food

Bear sightings are becoming more and more common in our area, but one Merrill woman saw a sight barely anyone sees – a mother bear and her four cubs in her yard.

Jeri Raddatz of Merrill sent NewsChannel 7 video of the five bears on her property earlier this month. They ravaged her bird feeder.

Authorities say bears are out looking for food this time of year, but if you see one you shouldn’t approach it. Wildlife experts say bears are pretty harmless if you leave them alone.

If you would rather not see a bear near you, you can decrease your odds of seeing one by not leaving trash and food outside of your home.

That same bear family was in my yard twice last night on 60th Avenue between Wausau and Merrill. One cub played on rocks by the fire pit under the watchful eye of the sow while the other three climbed a flight of stairs to the deck where they began climbing over a gate. My husband growled at them from a nearby window and they all took off for the woods. The state recommends taking down bird feeders for 30 days after bears are at them. Ours came down yesterday.
