A Gilman school that had its roof torn off in Monday's tornado reopened today.

The twister lifted the roof of Gilman High School's gymnasium and set it back down on the walls.

The football team was in the gym running drills but was moved to a tornado safe room when the winds picked up. The gym likely won't be used this year.

Continued rain has made cleanup even more difficult for the hundreds of people trying to help the Ladysmith area.

Rusk County Sheriff Dean Meyer says a Ladysmith police officer burned his hands Thursday when lightning hit a structure about 40 yards from the all-terrain vehicle he was riding while on patrol.

He says the officer did not require hospitalization.

Early reports say damage from the tornado, which injured 37 people, topped $20 million. It flattened 40 buildings and damaged 150 others.
