A Northwoods summer camp is helping some children have an experience of their lifetime.

For the past 5 years "Camp Awesum" in Saint Germain has provided a traditional summer camp for children on the autism spectrum.

Organizers say the week-long program features many camp activities like fishing and arts and crafts, but also special sensory areas designed for the child's needs.

Campers say those extras help them be free.

"We don't have to worry about all that stuff that we normally do," said David, a 4th year camper. "A lot of the social barriers are gone."

More than 45 kids are attending this year's Camp Awesum, many of which are returning from last year.

The campers say they love coming back and seeing people who have become their life-long friends.

This is the fourth year my daughter has attended camp AND I have been a counselor. A great time was had by all! This is truly a gift to the parents and the kids. The kids are free to be themselves in a supportive and understanding atmosphere with no prejudice, bullying or putdowns that they endure the rest of the year.

Camp Awesum is for autistic kids ages 8-15. You will find the information at www.campawesum.org and the cost is right around $850.00 as they employ every therapist and doctor needed to ensure these kids have an amazing week. Glenis Benson heads the camp and is quite honestly, the most loving, respectful and giving of persons. She loves "her kiddos". She also has a private practice in which she works with families/schools/communities with people on the spectrum. She is a gift to the autism community! With only 45 campers accepted its tough to get the kids in but once you do your golden! Glenis Benson's contact information: "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle." Does anyone how to contact the camp, and the cost, or if they have scholarships available?
