Wisconsin residents can start their fight against unwanted telemarketers' calls with a phone call.
The state expects about one million households to take advantage of its new do-not-call list. It will allow people to sign up for a list that will bar telemarketers from calling them and create new regulations for telemarketers.
Sign-up starts Wednesday.
The state consumer protection agency has received thousands of inquiries after the list was approved in last year's state budget.
The initial sign-up period will last through Dec. 1 and then will be offered quarterly. People who register will stay on the list for two years.
The program will take effect Jan. 1, but a legislative committee must still approve rules governing the program.
To sign up for the list, call toll-free (866) 966-2255.
Officials say since they've received so many calls people should sign on up on the Internet at http://nocall.wisconsin.gov.
