The Trip of a Lifetime: Veterans Meet Their Guardians

The never forgotten honor flight leaves Tuesday morning. WWII veterans from NorthCentral Wisconsin will head to Washington, D.C. to see the WWII memorial and other cites.

Sunday evening, the vets met the men and women who'll be taking care of them during their trip to the nation's capital.

It's evident before they even walk through the front door that these members of The Greatest Generation will be treated with the respect they so richly deserve.

After filling out some quick paperwork, it's a trip back in time, with news of the end of the war, uniforms of the conflict and a modern day tavern transformed into a USO watering hole.

The Guardians, the men and women who will care for veterans on the trip are waiting in line to greet their new friends with open arms.

"Harvey, nice to meet you, welcome!" says one as he meets his vet for the first time.

Organizers say the guardians are a vital part of making the trip take off.

The guardians say it's the least we can do for the people who fought for our freedom.

The warmth they're getting from their new found friends is not lost on the vets, even a couple days before they head off to the nation's capital.

After meeting each other, the vets and guardians are treated to dinner. They walk into the banquet hall with modern day warriors standing at attention and a bagpipe sarenade.

After that, it's The National Anthem, a song that still brings these men, now in their 80's, to full attention.

Some of them, like Bob Moore still not believing they're about to take the trip of a lifetime, "never thought i'd get the chance to go. I sure appreciated it."

The guardians are not only donating their time. They're also paying their own airline ticket to D.C. It amounts to a donation of about $500.

If you'd like to help the next group of vets taking the trip send a check payable to the "Never Forgotten Honor Flight"
